African Masks Postcard Book
For more than five thousand years, masks have been a characteristic African art form and a central feature of African ceremonial and social life. In assuming the role of the mask, the wearer is transformed from an everyday personality into an expression of a spirit force. The mask spirit comes alive through music, dance, and the social context in which it appears. Today, masks are often worn in public performances for general entertainment.The thirty masks presented here are from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
