Egyptian Stars Umbrella
Emile Prisse d’Avennes, the preeminent orientalist, labored 15 years to compile one of the most complete records on ancient Egypt (1847). He lived and traveled extensively throughout Egypt, recording in detail, artifacts that have long since been either mutilated or destroyed.Ancient Egyptians noticed a group of stars in the northern sky that did not set as other stars did. These ‘imperishable stars of the northern sky’ were sometimes considered a heavenly abode of the justified dead.
The decorative star pattern on this umbrella, has been adapted from D’Avennes’ book in the Brooklyn Museum Library Collection.
