Eva Hesse Spectres 1960
Published in conjunction with the Museum's exhibition, this catalog focuses on a group of oil paintings created in 1960 by American artist Eva Hesse (1936–1970). It explores the "spectre" paintings not as self-portraits per se, but as manifestations of Hesse's private experiences, dreams, and visions, which were haunted by her childhood trauma as a German Holocaust survivor. Unlike Hesse's later sculptural work, these paintings were central to the formation of the feminist-minimalist canon. They examine a variety of emotional states through the depiction of recurring figures or visages.Hardcover only
