Infinite Island: Contemporary Caribbean Art
In conjunction with the exhibition Infinite Island: Contemporary Caribbean Art, this catalog presents a diverse, exciting selection of recent painting, installation, photography, prints, drawings, video, and sculpture by forty-five emerging and established Caribbean artists who live and work in the region and abroad. The phrase "Infinite Island" suggests the tension between containment and expansion, insularity and global interconnection, that continues to define the Caribbean and its geopolitical relationship with Europe and North America—tension that is an animating force in its culture and its art.The artists represented in the exhibition and catalog reflect a hybrid culture and offer competing ideas about Caribbean identity through work done in the last six years. Two introductory essays by contemporary-art historians survey themes treated by the artists and offer insights into the traditions and contemporary art trends at work in the region.
The book contains 200 color illustrations.
