One of the great Japanese landscape artists, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) began his last print series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo when he was sixty years old. Edo (modern Tokyo), is where Hiroshige was born & lived his entire life. The prints in his last series reflect the introspection & solitude of Hiroshige's last years & are considered to be masterpieces in the history of ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world).
