Peruvian Llama Pin
Llamas have both practical and symbolic importance throughout the history of Andean culture. Besides providing meat and fiber, llamas were the only beasts of burden used in the Andes in Pre-Columbian times. They carried products between vastly different ecological zones. This llama carries a leafy branch with fruit: its back decorated with beans, flowers, a chili pepper and other vegetables. This silver planted pin is adapted from one of the figures along the intricate border of the Museum's famous mantle, known as the Paracas Textile. The mantle was made about two thousand years ago on Peru's South Coast where the Paracas civilization developed. The extraordinary detailed workmanship demonstrates that textiles were the preeminent arts in this society.
