William Morris (English, 1834-1896), a principal founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, was also a writer of poetry and fiction, a founder of England's socialist movement, and a designer of typefaces, fabrics, and wallpaper. Morris's genius shone especially brightly, however, in the design of complex, balanced, intricately repetitive print patterns. The twelve sumptuous floral and foliate wallpaper designs in this calendar, from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, were selected from a William Morris and Company sample book published around the turn of the twentieth century.
