Yin Yang Card Case
Yin and Yang are two enduring concepts that belong to early Chinese Cosmology. Together they signify the dual natural principles and forces of the universe. Individually, yin is a symbol of what is female, dark, terrestrial, recessive, cool, and submissive, while yang is emblematic of what is male, bright, celestial, aggressive, warm and dominant.The unusual yin yang symbol on this card case is based on an image from a volume of Shokubun Ruisan, a series of 10 volumes devoted to the art of weaving. Compiled by the Imperial Household Museum in Tokyo, this series offers spectacular color plates of different patterns of weaving. This rare set of books is in the Art Reference Library at the Brooklyn Museum.
