Costa Rican Silver Frog Necklace
This sterling silver frog pendant is inspired by a Costa Rican ornament in the Brooklyn Museum's collection. Frogs were abundant in ancient Costa Rican art and, like this example, most are portrayed seated with their hind legs flexed. In Costa Rican mythology, the frog was associated with water and the world below. According to some accounts, the frog was also thought to have a protective function. Seated on top of a burial, the frog prevented the dead from disturbing the living.
