William Morris Grape Vine Tie

William Morris (English, 1834-1896) a writer, designer & practicing Socialist, was a lifelong opponent of mass production. Believing that art should find expression in utilitarian objects that could be enjoyed as part of everyday life, Morris worked in a wide range of fields including textiles, furniture, tiles, glass & wallpaper. Morris completed 49 wallpaper designs, almost all using floral, fruit, or foliage motifs. This tie design was adapted from a plate in a William Morris' wallpaper sample book in the Brooklyn Museum's collection.
