An exquisitely illustrated celebration of animals who live in packs, herds, pods, and more—including humans. Vivid art and exuberant vocabulary are perfect for emerging readers and parents looking for nonfiction picture books for home learning. Packs shows how togetherness and teamwork are the keys to survival of any species, and the many ways we rely on one another. Groups, packs, herds of millions, and more—our world teems with animals on land, air, and sea.
Packs is an inspiring celebration of how togetherness helps many creatures thrive, in both nonhuman and human communities. Hannah Salyer’s stunning selection reminds us that teamwork is universal, there is brilliance in biodiversity, and there is strength in numbers. Includes an author’s note encouraging community engagement and activism, as well as a fun visual index of the animals featured.
Hannah received her BFA in illustration and communication design, with a minor in environmental studies, from Pratt Institute. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, where she writes and illustrates picture books, makes pottery, sculpture and fine art. Her work is rooted in a deep fascination with ecological systems, how different creatures experience the Anthropocene, humans’ relationship to other species and how it has changed over time. Her work has been recognized by American Illustration, and featured in a show for burgeoning children’s book artists at the Interchurch Center of NYC in 2019. In her free time, she can be found tending to her garden, saying hello to the crow who rests in the sycamore outside her window, or taking a walk in her neighborhood.
