Based on ornaments designed in the Bauhaus era, this set is crafted in Germany from turned maple wood and displays the modernist vision of the art movement.
In celebration of the centennial-plus-one of the Bauhaus (1919 – 2019), Brooklyn Museum is pleased to offer this set of 12 turned wood Christmas ornaments. Their clean geometric forms are reminiscent of the costume designs of Oskar Schlemmer for the Triadic Ballet. These ornaments are crafted in the Black Forest in Germany, to a large extent by hand. Designed in 1929/30, these ornaments are attributed to Bauhaus architect Johannes Gabriel in Dessau. The originals were found in an estate of an architect from Cologne who purchased many objects directly from the Bauhaus.
