Collectible. Covetable. Comfortable. The Sleeping Bag Coat is a classic icon of designer Norma Kamali, and of Studio 54. This piece is included in our exhibition Studio 54: Night Magic. Originally designed in 1973, the Sleeping Bag Coat created a frenzy among fashion-hungry style seekers and remains as relevant and chic today. Using the NASA method for warmth, each coat is actually two coats sewn together with air pockets in between; heat from the body exchanges with the cold from outside. This generous fit + boxy style is ideal for full-length coverage in the cold winter weather. Slouchy dropped shoulders and ample sleeves give an easy, comfortable wear in this downy, poly-filled coat. Style it up with the wide, dramatic notched lapels and high collar. Can be worn open, or wrapped and tied. Ample sleeves can be rolled or used as a hand muff. Must be sponge cleaned, and never dry cleaned.
Fashion designer Norma Kamali was hugely influential to the visual language of Studio 54. She was a regular at the nightclub, and the infamous door staff were typically outfitted in her designs.
The exhibition Studio 54: Night Magic traces the radiant history, social politics, and trailblazing aesthetics of the most iconic nightclub of all time. Behind the velvet rope, partygoers of all backgrounds and lifestyles could come together for nights of music, dazzling lights, and "The Hustle". Highlighting the revolutionary creativity, expressive freedom, and sexual liberation celebrated at the world-renowned nightclub, Studio 54: Night Magic uses photography, fashion, drawing, film, never-before-exhibited costume illustrations, set proposals, and designs to place the nightclub within the wider history of New York.
