Instruction sheet
Founded in Tokyo in 1818, Aikuma Senryo began as a Chinese herbal apothecary and later started selling dye supplies. In the 1870s, when indigo was exceptionally valuable, Aikuma Senryo developed a method of extracting indigo pigments by boiling old indigo-dyed fabric in water and forming a clay-like dye called airou (indigo wax). Based on the airou method, Aikuma Senryo created Yamato Indigo, a powder dye made of extracts from indigo plants, chemical indigo, an alkaline agent, and a reducing agent.
