Gerald Williams (American, born 1941). Nation Time, 1969.

Artwork by Gerald Williams was featured in our exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. Williams’s Nation Time 1969 depicts leaders of the 1960s and 1970s paired with vernacular messages the group African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA) wanted to impress upon black people on the streets. Nation Time features warm multicolor text that reads ‘DON’T BE JIVIN UNITE’ painted in what Barbara Jones-Hogu called, in the 1973 Inaugurating AfriCOBRA: History, Philosophy and Aesthetics manifesto, ‘pure vivid colors of the sun and nature. Colors that shine on Black people’.

This print has been produced with the highest quality pigmented, non-toxic, environmentally friendly ink with a color permanence rating of at least 200-year stability. Printed on 100% acid-free cotton fine art paper. Prints are available either unframed or framed. All unframed prints include a suitably sized white border which enhances their look when placed in any standard off-the-shelf frame. Frames are made of wood and available in Black or White.
