Frida Kahlo (Mexican, 1907-1954). Self-Portrait with Necklace, 1933.
In Self Portrait with Necklace, Kahlo makes use of the Colonial style bust portraiture, as she often has throughout her oeuvre. This work shows Kahlo simply adorned with a blue jade beaded necklace and delicate lace blouse. Her blush cheeks, braided hair, and lipstick all show Kahlo’s unabashed embrace of her own femininity, and her confidence and beauty radiate from the work’s surface.
