Florine Stettheimer, American, 1871-1944. Heat, 1919.
Typifying Stettheimer's exuberant use of color, this dreamy circus scene shows the artist's love for playing in the space between reality and fantasy. Stettheimer had great abilities as a stage-designer and even created sets and costumes for Gertrude Stein’s opera, “Four Saints in Three Acts.” She did not fully realize this potential, opting instead to paint, but the interest peeks through in the elaborate scenes such as that of Love Flight of a Pink Candy Heart. The joyous nature of Stettheimer's work is almost unparalleled for the tumultuous times during which she was painting.
