Charles Sheeler, American, 1883-1965. Amoskeag Mills 2, 1948.
Sheeler visited Amoskeag Mills in Manchester, New Hampshire long after they had been shuttered and was taken by their empty and silent expansiveness. He took photographs at the time which he later turned into photo collages, one of which was taken as the inspiration for this painting. Notably, Sheeler has removed all minor details to emphasize the simplicity of the subject.
