Joya x Brooklyn Museum
For their inaugural multi-sensory partnership, two beloved, innovative Brooklyn-based institutions (one a cult-favorite newcomer, the other on the eve of its 200th anniversary) join forces to evoke the seasons, settings and spirit of Utagawa Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo in vivid, meticulous detail. This project was inspired by a special exhibition of Hiroshige’s masterworks, organized by Joan Cummins, Lisa and Bernard Selz Senior Curator, Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum and on view from April 5-August 4, 2024. In collaboration with Manager of Group Experiences (and perfume historian) Jessica Murphy, Director of Merchandising and Retail Strategy Amber Luan and Senior Design Manager Austin Dewees, Joya founder, designer and “non-perfumer” Frederick Bouchardy has assembled rare resins, essences of leaves and petals and other raw materials in unexpected compositions. These unique scents conjure up the seasonal landscapes of Hiroshige’s prints, adding an experiential layer to the exhibition—and they can be taken home as well.
