Georgia O'Keeffe (American, 1887–1986). Ranchos Church, No. II, NM, 1929.
In this oil painting, the second work in a series started during O'Keeffe's visit to Taos, New Mexico, she depicts a mission church in Rancho de Taos. The church becomes indecipherable from the dry, desert-like landscape, as the structure passes for a natural rocky formation emerging from the ground. The muted tan tones of the church and foreground sharply contrast the bright blue sky of the background. The simplified forms and smooth yet sharp tonal gradations add an emotional element to the painting, combining representational with spiritual.
