Georgia O'Keeffe (American, 1887–1986). Pelvis with the Moon – New Mexico, 1943.
A prime example of O’Keeffe’s signature blend of realism and abstraction, this oil painting depicts the enlarged pelvic bone of an animal at its center against a blue landscape. The magnified pelvis takes up the majority of the pictoral space in the foreground, obscuring elements such as the moon and an uneven terrain in the background. Tones of gray and white make up the smooth shadows edges of the bone while the blues of the background show the vastness of the New Mexican landscape.
