Charles Sheeler, American, 1883-1965. Skyscrapers, 1922.
Sheeler once said that artists must “find elements of beauty in the new world.” This call to action encapsulates his lifelong project of bringing modernism to the American viewer by depicting subjects with epitomized the American experience. In this painting, Sheeler was inspired by his work on the iconic 1920 film Manhattan to paint New York skyscrapers with his usual eye for minimal but beautiful forms in new structures.
