Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). Femme en gris, 1942.
In this painting, flat, interlocking shapes come together to form a bust-length portrait of a woman wearing a pointed collar, veil, and broad-brimmed hat. The artist’s abstracted, fractured forms and austere palette evoke the violence and bleakness of life during World War II in German-occupied Paris, where Picasso created this and several other similar paintings in quick succession.
